Epitaph for a Timid Lady

When I was born a happy child
The waves ahead looked sweet and wild.
I lie beneath this final sheet
Who never found them wild or sweet.
I did not wish to wet my feet.

– Frances Cornford   1886-1960

I love this poem and I think it’s a wonderful reminder to live while we can but the last line feels wrong to me! It seems to me, from the title, that because the lady was timid she let fear take control of her life and it wasn’t that she didn’t want to wet her feet but that she was too scared to do so! So every time I read it I want to change the last line so that it reads:

“I was too scared to wet my feet.”

I think it would have more impact that way and inspire people to not let fear stop them doing the things they want in life rather than the anti-climactic ending of her just choosing not to!

What do you think?

I started my website because of my love of poetry but in working out how to make it I found that I also love web page design and graphic making. Until recently I have mainly just worked out how to make things as I’ve needed them for the site but lately I’ve found myself playing around with graphics more and more and the above graphic with my Dance Of Falling Leaves poem on it is one of the results 🙂

You’re welcome to use it if you would like to but no alterations or modifications are to be made to it. It’s shown quite a lot smaller than the actual size but clicking on it will take you to a page where you can download it full size or get the HTML code so you can just paste it into the page where you want to use it.

I’ve just added two poems to my site. The first is a rondeau poem called Green Hills Of Erin. I have never been to Ireland but I’ve always thought it looks really beautiful in photos and I wrote this poem when I was imagining how I might feel about it if it was my homeland. To read Green Hills Of Erin click here. The second poem is called Snatched Away and is about my brother in-law Mick who died when he was only 36 years old. I wrote it 7 1/2 years after he died when I had a vivid dream about when I was sitting with him in the intensive care unit and woke up feeling like it had just happened. You can read it here.

I’ve also added another page to the unicorn gallery. This page features the wonderful custom made graphic set that was part of the prize package I received when my poem, called Friend, won first place in the Moonglade Designs 2005 poetry contest. I’ve also had some fun with applets on this page and it has a water applet, a snow applet and, one I’ve never used before, a colour rotating applet. I hope you enjoy it! Click on the unicorn at right to be magically taken there 🙂 Image

I’m also very happy to announce that my cinquain entitled Untarnished won first place in the 4th quarter 2005 Little Bitty Poetry Competition. Untarnished isn’t on my website as yet but you can read it, along with the poems that placed second and third, here. I’d also like to let you know that two of my recent cinquain poems are appearing in the current issue of Amaze: The Cinquain Journal. They are titled Writer’s Block and Nightmare and you can check out the issue they’re in here.
